The Building and Other Construction Workers (BOCW) Act, 1996

The Building and Other Construction Workers (BOCW) Act, 1996 is a law that regulates the employment and working conditions of construction workers in India. It also provides for their safety, health, and welfare. 

What the BOCW Act does 

  • Regulates the employment and working conditions of construction workers
  • Provides for the safety, health, and welfare of construction workers
  • Ensures better working conditions for construction workers
  • Provides for the constitution of Central and State Advisory Committees
  • Provides for the constitution of Welfare Boards by the State Governments
  • Provides for the registration of beneficiaries under the Fund
  • Provides for the provision of identity cards to beneficiaries

Who the BOCW Act applies to 

  • Applies to any establishment that employs 10 or more construction workers

Benefits of the BOCW Act 

  • Workers with a BOCW card are entitled to social security benefits, medical assistance, maternity benefits, accident coverage, and pension
